For the 2010 US Open, Nike released a highly limited edition Nike Lunar Vapor Tour tennis sneaker with the New York City skyline on the heel; it was a massively popular cosmetic similar to the pair Federer wore for the tournament. The release sold out extremely quickly, and many of them were even resold for multiples of the retail price.

Here are Roger Federer's iconic 2010 US Open NYC Skyline sneakers. The presented pair is Federer's actual personal custom pair, made for him to wear at the 2010 US Open by Nike. This was an extra pair that he did not end up wearing during the tournament. These sneakers are completely different than publicly available pairs. Federer's pair features his embroidered RF logo as well as embroidered US Open trophy silhouette with the number 5, signifying Federer's 5 previous US Open triumphs. This is a detail that Federer's sneakers did not see again after the 2015 US Open, as Nike was no longer allowed to use the trophy on their product due to an intellectual property dispute. Federer's sneakers have a carbon fiber plate in the sole, not present on retail versions, as well as an entirely different outsole tread pattern. The size tag reads "AIR ZOOM VAPR 6 TR RF," "RF 2010 US OPEN DAY" and "PROMO SAMPLE."

At the 2010 US Open, Federer was the number 2 ranked player in the world and reached the semifinal. He lost a famous semifinal match to Novak Djokovic, after holding two match points in the fifth set.
